National Resources:

The National Archives: The UK government’s archive which is home to millions of historical documents. You can order birth, marriage and death certificates, and browse their catalogue online. (London)

The British Library: They have a copy of every publication produced in the UK and Ireland with over 150 million items in their archive! You can search their catalogue online. (London)

The Wellcome Library: A major resource for anyone interested in the study of medical history. Their catalogue can be searched online. (London)

The Royal Collage of Nursing: Their library holds on the world’s largest collections specialising in nursing. Their new library will be ready in September 2013 (London)

The Workhouse:  A good starting point for anyone interested in Workhouses. This website by Peter Higginbotham contains a wealth of information on Workhouses .

Local Resources:

Surrey History Centre: Archiver of the Year Award (2012), the SHC hold a substantial archive pertaining to Surrey’s past. (Woking)

The Guildford Institute: The GI has a wonderful library and archives room holding pamphlets, scrapbooks, photographs and postcard collections. (Guildford)
